American Bobtail Cats

They are true family cats that may take to entertaining the family with its clown-like antics as well as being carried around like a sack of potatoes by children.

American Bobtail cats have powerful, athletic bodies. This cat breed has a rectangular stance. They are medium to large sized cats. The tail is naturally bobbed, not docked by the breeder. The average length of the tails is one to four inches. This cat breed has a natural rolling gait that is reminiscent of wildcats.

The American Bobtail cat has a broad, modified wedge-shaped head featuring large almond-shaped eyes. This cat breed has medium-sized ears that are wide set and upright. Tufts of hair at the ears are highly desirable among American Bobtail show cats since it accents their wild appearance. The neck of American Bobtail cat is medium in length, but it may appear short.

The hair of American Bobtail cats can be medium shorthair or medium longhair. The longhair of American Bobtails is not prone to matting. Therefore, regular brushing is the only care needed for the coat. The coat is water resistant. The coloring of the cat can be any natural variation.

Among American Bobtails in cat shows, coloring that accents it wild appearance have preference. All eye colors are also acceptable. A regular length tail or total lack of a tail would disqualify an American Bobtail cat from a cat show. A delicate skeletal structure would also disqualify an American Bobtail from a cat show.

They tend to have dog-like personality characteristics evident in their devotion to their owners. The American Bobtail cats interact with the cat owner and family. They can be persistent if they want to play. American Bobtail cats are very intelligent.

American Bobtails cats get along well with dogs and children. American Bobtail cats tend to be quite affectionate and people-oriented which seems to conflict with its wildcat appearance. They make excellent therapeutic pets since they seem to sense when people are in distress.
