Aversion To Coarse Cat Litter

Some cats are choosy about the type of litter they will use. Cats have different levels of sensitivity in their paws. While one cat may not mind a harder, more abrasive litter, another cat may avoid using it. This can cause the cat to refuse to use that litter box and soil the home.

If a cat owner tries to use a cat litter with a harsher texture than previous litters used, then the cat may develop aversion to cat litter. Some cats may become more sensitive. While a harsh litter may have worked well in the past, the cat may gradually avoid using it.

Crystal litters that hold odor and may only need to be replaced once a month are not necessarily the best choice. Even if the litter does not need to be changed frequently, the litter box should still be scooped and maintained regularly. The crystals may be hard on the cat’s feet.

Clumping litters often have a softer texture, but they may have a lot of dust. Clay litters have slight variations in texture. Some may be harsh on the cat’s paws. Some cats not only have preferences of the texture of the litter, but also the amount of litter. Some cats prefer a lot of litter, while other cats like very little to no litter.

Cat owners may want to try a variety of cat litters set up in different cat boxes in the house. If the cats have a need for a soft litter, some recycled clumping litter is often softer than some of the harder crystals or clay litters. If a cat owner needs to look for litter that will be used by cats with tender feet, they may want to try cat litter alternatives such as sand, shredded newspaper, paper towels, or sawdust.

If the cat has sores on its feet or has been declawed recently, the cat owner should take care to keep the sores or incisions clean. Sand, litter, or anything that could contaminate the wounds should be avoided until the cat’s wounds are completely healed. During those times, it is better to use shredded newspaper that is replaced frequently, if not with every single use.
