Feline Illness - Common Cat Skin Problems
The feline skin is very tough and has three main functions: to act as a protective outer covering for the internal structures and organs, to act as a sensory layer around the entire body, and to regulate body temperature. It has a very good blood supply and is made up of a number of layers of cell tissues and skin structures such as the hair follicles, sensory cells, sebaceous (oil producing) glands and sweat glands.
It is important to monitor the condition of your cat's skin particularly because most of it is covered in fur, and you may not be aware of any developing conditions until there is hair loss or areas of weeping around abscesses or sores. When you groom your cat, always run your hands gently over the body and explore the skin. Part the fur so you can actually see the skin as this will give you the chance to inspect it gently and carefully on a regular basis and will get your cat used to being examined. You will soon know if there is a sensitive area or something doesn't look or feel right
Cats can fall prey to a number of dermatological conditions or display symptoms of dermatological problems. These are the main ones:
Cheyletiellosis
This is caused by skin mites and is extremely contagious between cats as well as humans. In cats it causes itching and results in heavy scaling and flaking of the skin, which is why it is sometimes called walking dandruff. It is easily treated once it has been identified it and can be eradicated altogether with prompt treatment.
Alopecia
This is hair loss caused by endocrine disturbances, localized infections, or generalized illnesses. It can also be caused by stress. You will see bald patches which may or may not be accompanied by reddened or inflamed skin. Once the underlying cause has been treated it is likely the fur will grow back again.

Pruritis / Pruritus
This is more of a symptom of an underlying disease or condition than a condition in itself. It is felt as a sharp or painful sensation in the skin in reaction to a number of factors such as stress, infection, toxins from bites, and allergies.
Cat Acne
Feline acne is quite common and is easily treatable. However other skin conditions such as ringworm or mange can masquerade as cat acne so it is important to make an appointment so that the vet can give your cat acne treatment and advice.
Scratch wounds
These are usually the result of territorial fights with other cats, or getting trapped in areas where they can be scratched by wire or broken glass. These wounds need immediate treatment so that they do not become infected, and in the case of deep wounds it is important to check that no structures underneath the skin have been damaged.
In the domestic cat, skin rashes are more likely to be identified early if you keep a careful watch. Most are caused by allergies to food or pest bites and are easily treated, but if you're aware of possible problems you can be a great help to the veterinary team in early diagnosis and treatment.
