Cymric Cats

The Cymric cat breed is essentially a Manx cat with a longhair coat. The Cymric cat is recognized as a division of the Manx cat breed by The International Cat Association (TICA). The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) of the United States no longer recognizes the Cymric as a separate cat breed. The CFA considers the Cymric cats to be longhaired Manx cats.

Cymric cats have a medium to semi-long coats. With the longer coat, Cymric cats have tufts between their toes and full furnishings in their ears. The Cymic cats have longhair at the britches or upper rear portion of the legs. The hair on the abdomen and neck ruff is longer than the rest of the body. The coat of Cymrics is described as silky. Like the Manx cat, the Cymric has a double coat.

The body type of Manx and Cymric cats is cobby. They are medium-sized, well-muscled cats. Cymrics should have relatively heavy bone structure. Like the Manx cat breed, the Cymric should appear tailless though there may be a slight rise in the bone or cartilage where the tail would be.

Cymric kittens are slow to mature. Though some Cymric kittens can be born with full or partial tails, they are not eligible for championship competitions according to breed standards. Though tailed Cymrics are not eligible for competition, they may still be used in breeding programs.

Manx cats and Cymric cats have full, round faces with muzzles that are slightly longer than they are wide. They have rounded foreheads and prominent cheeks. Their ears are wide at the base with rounded tips. The eyes of Cymrics are rounded with a slight slant of the outer corner towards the ears.

A Cymric kitten tends to retain its playfulness into adulthood. They often like to perch high on shelves or on top of bookcases or cabinets. Their play activities are sometimes described as dog-like. Some Cymric cats will even bury their toys like dogs do. Cymric cats are also loyal and develop strong attachments to either one person or their family. Someone looking for a Cymric kitten may want to inquire with Manx cat breeders to see if they have this longhaired variety.
