Desert Lynx Cats

The Desert Lynx cat breed is bred to resemble bobcats. The bobcat is the foundation of the Desert Lynx cat breed. Desert Lynx cats result from breeding bobcats with certain breeds of domestic cats. A Desert Lynx breeding association has identified the Maine Coon, American Lynx, Manx, Pixie-Bob, and American Bobtail as acceptable cat breeds to breed with Bobcats to produce Desert Lynx cats. This is a relatively new cat breed, so it may be difficult for a prospective owner to find an available Desert Lynx kitten.

Despite its wild beginnings, the Desert Lynxes often make friendly and affectionate pets. Desert Lynx kittens retain their playfulness throughout their lives. They are intelligent and social. The personality of the Desert Lynx cat has been described as dog-like loyalty, playfulness, and affection. Desert Lynx cats are generally people-oriented.

Since the goal of the Desert Lynx cat breed is to replicate the features of the bobcat, the breed standards reflect this desire. The body type of Desert Lynx cats is strong, muscular, and large. Female Desert Lynx cats can be up to twenty pounds. Male Desert Lynx cats can weigh up to twenty-five pounds. Desert Lynx cats have large, rounded heads and thick, muscular necks. The male Desert Lynx cats have jowls.

The squared muzzle helps emulate the characteristics of a bobcat. The large, almond-shaped eyes are wide set. The eyes can be green or gold colored. Desert Lynx cats have wide ears that are large and wide set. The ears have tufted tips like bobcats. The wide noses can be either pink with a black outline or black for black-colored Desert Lynxes. The tails of Desert Lynx cats can be of various lengths.

Desert Lynx cats have coats that are plush and smooth. Many of the colorings of the coat of this cat breed reflect their bobcat heritage. They can have solid black colored coats or coats with leopard-like spots, swirled spots, or a combination of leopard and swirled spots. The coat pattern with swirled spots is called marbled. Clouded leopard refers to the coat pattern with a combination of leopard and swirled spots. The spotted leopard coats can be white, blue, charcoal, silver, chocolate, red, lavender, beige, or copper.
