Elf Cats

The Elf cat breed is a new hybrid cat breed that resulted from the deliberate breeding of Sphynx cats and American Curl cats. Elf cats are also bred with domestic shorthair cats. An Elf cat has distinctive characteristics from the Sphynx and American Curl cats. From the American Curl, the Elf cats get their wide ears that curl backwards in a smooth arc.

From the Sphynx, the Elf cat gets it hairless or almost hairless body. Elf cats may have fine, downy hair on their feet, tail, nose, ears, and scrotums. Slight, downy hair may be present on other parts of the body, but the elf cat tends to look hairless. The fine coat of Elf cats has been described as resembling a peach. Even the whiskers are sparse and short.

Elf cats are social. An Elf cat may socially interact with other cats and cat-friendly dogs as well as their owners. They develop strong social connections with their favorite companion. Elf cats may choose to follow the person or dog with which they have bonded and are generally happy just to be around their favorite companion.

Other than socializing with their favorite companions, Elf cats are playful. Being an athletic and active cat, an elf cat may spend a considerable amount of time climbing and exploring. They are tolerant and even affectionate towards children.

Even though an Elf cat is mostly hairless, some minimal grooming on a weekly basis is recommended. Rubbing the cat down with a soft, chamois cloth helps remove dirt and any excess oil on the skin. The cat owner should also check the cat’s ears for cleanliness and clean if necessary. A monthly bath is also recommended.

Elf cats are medium to large size. The males may be larger than the females. Mature Elf cats weigh twelve to fifteen pounds. Elf kittens have wrinkled skin. The Elf cat breed is not yet recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). The founding breeders are developing the cat breed. Since this is a new hybrid cat breed, prospective Elf cat owners may have difficulty obtaining an Elf kitten.
