Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) affects the bladder and urethra of the cat. The term “idiopathic” means that the exact cause of the condition is unknown. Urinary tract health of cats is a common concern for cat owners. This is one of many conditions that affect the bladder and urinary tract of cats.

The signs of feline idiopathic cystitis are related to difficulty urinating. A cat with feline idiopathic cystitis may cry or strain while urinating or the urine may be tinged with blood. Idiopathic cystitis in cats can also cause frequent urination. Cat with this condition may have accidents contrary to their usual litter box training. Though the symptoms of feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) seem to be completely related to the bladder and urinary tract, some research indicates that this condition could also be due to abnormalities of the endocrine and nervous systems.

There are several different conditions that can cause pain while urinating or changes in the cat’s litter box behavior. If a cat has difficulty urinating, the cat owner should have the cat examined by a veterinarian. If the cat cannot urinate at all, this is considered a veterinary emergency and the cat should be taken to the veterinarian or animal hospital as soon as possible.

Feline idiopathic cystitis has been linked to elevated stress on the affected cat. Many things can cause stress on a cat. Improper diet or periods when the cat goes without food or other necessities can cause stress on a cat. Drastic changes such as changing residences, changes in the people or activity in the home, or natural disasters can cause stress on cats.

It is not uncommon for urinary problems to develop two or three days after a stressful event. Providing cats with positive interaction with their owners as well as the elimination or management of drastic changes and conflict with other pets or children in the household can help reduce the cats’ stress and the risk of urinary tract problems related to stress. If such events, such as a change in residence, are planned, the cat owners can ask the veterinarian for advice on ways to help the cat adjust to the changes in the least stressful way possible.
