A basic homemade cat food recipe includes red meat and fish, finely chopped carrots, and grains such as wheat germ, oats, rice, or barley. The red meat and fish are high in protein, which should constitute the bulk of the cat food. For example, four to six ounces of meat, one to two tablespoons of chopped carrots, and one third cup cooked rice could be considered a basic recipe for homemade cat food. The meat always needs to be thoroughly cooked before giving the homemade cat food to the cat.

In many homemade cat food recipes, all the ingredients are mixed first and then fried or sautéed until the meat and eggs are thoroughly cooked.

Though some people turn to making cat food in an effort to cut household expenses, homemade cat food may not be as beneficial to the budget as the cat owner thought. If the meat is not expensive, than homemade cat food may be cheaper than store bought. Many times, the cost of meat and other ingredients is much more than commercial cat food. If the cat has any health concerns, including obesity, the cat owner should consult the veterinarian on the best diet for the cat’s health.
