The Honey Bear cat breed is a large-sized, docile cat. The name is said to derive from the tendency of Honey Bear cats to lie flat on the floor, which gives them some resemblance to a bearskin rug. That bearskin-like position coupled with their sweet nature makes “Honey Bear” seems to be a fitting name.
The origin of the Honey Bear cat is difficult to trace. The first Honey Bears were from a well-known, eccentric cat breeder, Ann Baker, who had established the Ragdoll cat breed as well. It is thought that the Honey Bear cat breed is a variation or lineage of the Ragdoll cat. Though the breeder claimed that the Honey Bear cat breed resulted from genetic engineering that introduced skunk DNA into the first Honey Bear litter, this is scientifically impossible.
Despite the frequent, bizarre claims of government interference, genetic manipulation, and alien activity in her cattery, the breeder should be credited with the development of these loveable cat breeds. Like the Ragdoll cat breed, Honey Bear cats are large, gentle, and affectionate cats. The skunk legend may have had its foundation in the appearance of Honey Bear kittens.
Honeybear kittens are often born with dark, striped coats. As the Honey Bear kitten matures, the coat often lightens and white or light striping may appear. Honey Bear cats were sometimes bred with Persian cats. Like the Persians, the Honey Bear cat has a broad head and thick, cobby body. Honey Bears also have short muzzles, though they are not as snub-nosed as the Persian.
The longhaired coats of Honeybear cats can be a variety of colors. Striped patterns seem to be characteristic of the breed. The ears of Honey Bear cats are small and somewhat rounded. The ears are set well apart. The tail is medium length with dense, long hair which may have been a characteristic that led some to believe the skunk legend.
Honey Bear cats are laidback and easygoing like the Persian and Ragdoll cat breeds. Though the Honey Bear cat is not accepted by any notable cat registry other than one specifically for Ragdoll cats, they are considered excellent pets. Their gentle nature makes them well-suited for family life.
