How Fast Can Cats Run?

Cats have been admired for their graceful movement, speed, and agility. Information about large cats in the wild, whether the information is in the form of a documentary or website, often mention the speed of the large cats. The cheetah is the fastest land mammal. Cheetahs can reach speeds of up to seventy-one miles per hour. The cheetah cannot maintain this top speed for long periods of time.

Though speed is typically associated with cheetahs, other cats are quite fast as well. The top speed of leopards is considered to be almost forty miles per hour. Some resources state that lions can run fifty miles per hour, but it is generally accepted that lions and the other large cats reach speeds of around thirty-five miles an hour.

Large cats like lions and tigers have considerable body mass. Their size can inhibit their ability to run for significant lengths. For example, tigers, though very fast, typically only have short pouncing bursts. They are not as sleek as Cheetahs. It takes much more muscle and energy to propel their bodies forward to achieve high speeds.

Some of the prey of these large cats have higher top speeds, but some cats have faster acceleration rates. Wildebeests are surprisingly fast and can reach top speeds of approximately 40 miles per hour and quite possibly faster. Since a large cat can accelerate faster, the cat still has a chance to catch a wildebeest since it takes more time for the wildebeest to gain momentum.

How fast can a domestic cat run? It is estimated that domestic cats can reach speeds of up to thirty miles per hour. Even though domestic cats are generally slender and athletic, they are slower than the bulky large cats. What may have affected how fast a domestic cat can run? Part of the reason may be in the loss of the need for speed. Evolutionarily speaking, domestic cats do not have to be able to chase down prey at the speeds that the large cats do. Therefore, they may not have the same proportion of musculature of the hind legs that the large cats do.

Today my bro saw a fisher cat while he he was on his big bear four wheeler and that animal was chaseing him down ower road and he was going 20mph and it was gaining on him. When it stop it screamed and it sounded like a 4 year old girl sceaming as loud as she posibly could and we could hear it and it was blood curtling.

  2. Zach Says:

Surely if a domestic cat is traveling at 30 mph then in proportion to its size it will actually be traveling faster than a large cat. Wouldn’t that be the best possible explanation for why a domestic cat is a little slower despite its sleeker appearance?
