Korat Cats

The Korat cat breed is known for remarkable sensitivity. Not only do Korat cats have heightened senses of sight, hearing, and smell, but they are also considered to be sensitive to the cat owner’s emotions. Their sensitive senses can make this cat breed dislike sudden, harsh, or unpleasant stimuli in their environments.

Korat cats develop close bonds with their owners and thrive on close interaction. Korat cats can get along well with other cats in the household, but may be jealous if other cats try to jeopardize the owner’s affection.

Korat cats are said to originate from Korat, which is a province in Thailand. In Thailand, Korats are called Si-Sawat cats. Korat cats, like many other cat breeds, have been in existence for centuries. They have been considered a symbol of good luck. The first pair of Korat cats was first imported to the United States in 1959. In 1966, the Korat cat breed was accepted for championship status in the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA).

The cat’s coat is single and short-haired. The coat lies close to the body. The only acceptable coloring of Korats is silver-blue. The hairs are tipped in silver. The silver-tipping produces a halo effect. Korat kittens are born with blue eyes. As a Korat kitten matures, the eyes turn to a greenish-amber.

The Korat’s eyes are large and a rounded, slanted shape. The eyes are significantly large compared to the size of the head. The size of the eyes may contribute to the cat’s reputation for being alert and expressive.

The Korat cats are medium-sized and muscular. The body is semi-cobby. The head is heart-shaped when viewed from above. The eyebrow ridges are the top curves of the heart shape with the bottom of the shape completed by the chin. The Korat has a strong jaw that should not be pointed or too narrow. Korat cats have large ears with rounded tips. The tail of Korat cats is medium length.
The noses of Korats are dark blue or lavender. Korats are rare. Pricing and availability may limit a potential cat owner’s ability to obtain a Korat cat.
