The Manx cat is a tailless cat breed. Not all Manx kittens are tailless. Some may have full tails or short tails. Only Manx cats that have no tail or a stump, or rise, are eligible to compete. The rise is called rumpy riser. Manx cats with no tails are called rumpies. The Manx cat has a round head with rounded cheeks. This cat breed is sturdy and has a rounded appearance that is further accented by the lack of a tail and short, heavily-boned legs.
The Manx cat is considered one of the oldest natural cat breeds. Manx cats are native to the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland. The lack of a tail is thought to be a natural, genetic mutation. Due to originating from an isolated environment, the genetic mutation easily became prevalent in the breed.
Manx cats can be longhaired or shorthair. The longhair Manx cat has longer hair over the neck ruff, breeches, abdomen than the rest of the body. Manx cats may be solid colors, smoke or shaded colors, tabby, tortoiseshell, calico, or bi-color. The solid coloring of a Manx cat may be white, black, cream, red, blue, or chinchilla silver. The coat should be combed or brushed several times a week.
The eyes are round and slightly slanted with the outer corner somewhat higher than the inner corner of the eye. The eye color depends on the coloring of the cat’s coat. The Manx’s eyes can be deep blue, copper, hazel, green, or blue-green. The Manx cat is typically tolerant of children and other pets. Manx cats tend to develop a deep bond with their owner or family. Manx cats may only be happy with their family, though some are more welcome to any human interaction.
Some Manx cats bury their toys. Many like to play fetch. The Manx has been described as dog-like since it engages in those behaviors. Some Manx cats will also follow their owner and growl at disturbances. The Manx is playful and likes to perch on high areas. The Manx cat has powerful hind legs that are a little larger than the front legs.
