Munchkin Cats

The Munchkin cat breed has thick torsos and short legs. Munchkin cats may have a slight bowing of the leg bones. Munchkin cats began with a naturally occurring mutation of domestic cats born with disproportionately short legs. It was not until the 1980’s that short-legged cats were bred with the intent of establishing the Munchkin cat breed even though the existence of short-legged domestic cats has been documented for decades prior.

A short-legged female cat named Blackberry was discovered in Louisiana. Blackberry’s litters were half regular-sized kittens and half short-legged Munchkin kittens. Toulouse, a male Munckin kitten of Blackberry’s was also used to establish the Munchkin cat breed. The Munchkin cat breed is recognized as one of the cat breeds with championship eligibility by The International Cat Association (TICA). However, the Munchkin cat breed is not recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) of the United States.

Munchkin cats are sociable and enjoy interacting with their owners. They are intelligent cats. Their stature resembles that of Dachshund dogs. Though Dachshund dogs can develop spinal problems associated with their short stature, Munchkin cats are not susceptible to spinal problems. Their short legs do not interfere with their playfulness and activity either. Not only are these cats tolerant of being handled, they seem to thrive on it. A Munchkin cat can make a delightful family pet.

The eyes of Munchkins are walnut-shaped and spaced far apart. Unlike many cat breeds, there is no relationship or restrictions between coat color and acceptable eye color. Munchkin cats are not heavily boned or fine boned. They should have athletic muscular bodies.

Male Munchkin cats may have thicker necks than females. Their ears should be in proportion to the head with a slightly wide base and somewhat rounded tips. The muzzles are moderate with medium noses.

Munchkin cats can be longhaired or shorthaired. Their coats are considered all-weather coats. The longhair Munchkins have semi-long, silky hair. The shorthair coats are dense and plush and are of medium to short length. There are no restrictions on coat color or pattern. Solid-colored shorthaired Munchkins may have coats that are less dense.
