Oriental Cats


Like many other cat breeds, the Oriental cat breed originated from the Siamese cat breed. These cats develop strong bonds with their owners. Oriental cats often attempt to be involved in their owners’ activities, whether it is by nudging at the owner while the owner is doing something or seeming to inspect the items that their owners are using. At other times, an Oriental cat is content to sit on the owner’s lap.

Oriental cats have been bred specifically to have a wide variety of colors and color patterns. The coat of the Oriental cat breed has over three hundred variations. Despite this cat breeds endearing temperament, many consider the coat variations to be the purpose and achievement of this cat breed. An Oriental cat can have long or short hair. The shorthaired coat of an Oriental cat is very short and lies against the body. The longhaired coat is medium in length with the longest hair on the tail.

Despite the original emphasis on coat variation, the owners may prize the personalities of Oriental cats over the color of their coats. This is an intelligent and curious cat breed. Oriental cats often spend time exploring the contents of drawers, shelves, in bags or purses, in and on top of cabinets, or any other area that piques the cats’ interest. Any object becomes a potential toy for an Oriental cat. They are also affectionate cats that crave attention from their owners.

The body of an Oriental cat is slender and long. Oriental cats are graceful beauties. Though they look rather fine-boned and almost delicate, they are actually muscular and agile. The overall appearance is of tapering lines. From the long, wedge-shaped muzzle to the lengthy, tapered tail, the Oriental cat is svelte and sleek. The legs are long and slender.

Oriental cats have large ears that are wide and the base and pointed. The eyes are almond shaped and medium in size. The eyes are slanted towards the nose. Eyes of most Oriental cats are green, but they can be blue or odd eyed. Pointed and white Oriental cats have blue eyes. White and bi-colored Oriental cats can have blue, green, or odd eyes.
