As legend proclaims, the Pixie-Bob cat breed originated from naturally occurring mating between the North American Bobcat and feral barn cats. The founder of the Pixie Bob cat breed claims that she acquired a barn cat that had an American Bobcat for a parent. These half domestic, half bobcat cats are sometimes called “Legend Cats.” She bred her Legend Cat with another Legend Cat. From that litter, the cat breeder selected a beautiful female that she named Pixie to be the foundation of the Pixie-Bob cat breed.
According to the regulations of The International Cat Association (TICA), no American Bobcats are to be held in captivity for the purpose of Pixie-Bob cat breeding. Legend cats, or cats believed to be half American Bobcat, may be used. Pixie Bobs strongly resemble North American Bobcats, but are truly domesticated.
Pixie Bob kittens remain playful well into adulthood. Pixie-Bob cats are intelligent and generally tolerant of children and other pets. Pixie Bobs are easily leash trained. According to the breed standard for Pixie-Bobs, a Pixie-Bob cat should not be at all threatening or challenging.
The breed standard for Pixie Bob cats demonstrates how the cat breeders are trying to emulate the appearance of North American Bobcats. The shape of the head of Pixie-bob cats is similar to that of an inverted pear. Pixiebobs have strong muzzles and heavily hooded eyes which lend to their wild appearance. Pixie-Bobs are rather heavily boned and muscular.
Pixie Bob cats have medium sized ears that are wide at the base. Tufted ear tips like lynx cats are a preferred breed standard. The eyes have a remarkable resemblance to the North American Bobcat. Pixiebob cats have eyes that are similar to triangles with a flat edge on top and slightly rounded lower edge. The outer corners of the eyes of Pixie-bobs slant upwards towards the ears.
Many Pixie-Bobs are polydactyl which means they have extra toes. Though this is a characteristic that would disqualify cats of other cat breeds in cat shows, polydactyl paws are allowed for Pixie-Bobs. Pixie Bobs can have shorthaired or longhaired coats. The typical coat pattern of Pixiebob cats is small spots with or without rosettes. Rosettes are spots that have a lighter inner color and darker color around the border. Light to medium shades of brown with a reddish hue are the preferred colors.
