Siberian Cats

The Siberian cat breed is an old cat breed with a very short history in the United States. Siberian cats were first imported in the United States in 1990. This cat breed was accepted for registration with the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) in 2000. Siberian cats may still be expensive and difficult to find in the United States since they are a rare, new breed in the United States.

The Siberian cat is one of the natural cat breeds, not those generated by crossbreeding. It is from Russia where it is the national cat. Recorded history proves the cat’s existence for at least one thousand years.

Siberian cats are loyal and people-oriented. They often greet their owners at the door when the owners return home. This cat breed can be somewhat dog-like in that Siberian cats may follow their owners from room to room.

Siberians are active and like to leap in the air. They tend to like to climb and rest in high places. Cat owners of Siberians should not put valuable items on high shelves where the cats like to be. Siberian cats seemed skilled at navigating items without breaking them. However, breakable items should be kept in areas away from the cat’s favorite perches to avoid breakage and potential cuts or injuries to the cat.

Siberian cats are semi longhaired cats. The cat’s hair is longer and thicker in the winter. Siberian cats come in a large variety of colors. All potential colors are acceptable according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association breed standard. The Siberian cat has a triple coat which can have heavy shedding at times.

The color of the eyes can be gold, green, green-gold, or copper. Siberian cats that are white or partly white may have blue or odd eyes. Cats with colorpoints have blue eyes. The eyes of Siberian cats are rounded and large.

The body of Siberian cats is muscular and medium in size. They are relatively thick boned. The top of the cat’s head is almost flat. Compared to most cat breeds, Siberian cats are extremely slow to mature. They may take up to five years to become mature.
