The Role Of Acceptance In Grieving For Cats

Grieving the death of a cat can be an extremely difficult process for a cat owner. The cat owner has shared unconditional love with the cat. Many cat owners view their cats as members of their families. If a human member of the family would die, the other members of the family would be encouraged to grieve. When pets die, the pet owners may feel that their feelings of grief are belittled and not generally accepted. People may not understand the loss that a pet owner feels for their lost pet.

Acceptance is an important concept during the grieving process. The individual needs to accept their own feelings for the loss of a cat. They should not feel pressured by others to deny their feelings. A grieving cat owner needs the freedom to express their feelings about the loss of a cat.

Sometimes, cat owners may judge themselves harshly for having a deep sense of loss over a pet. The grieving pet owner should understand that losing a pet is a true and deep loss. For many cat owners, the love of their cat is their only source of unconditional love. People are hard on themselves and critical of others, but the cat was always there. No matter what, the cat was affectionate and loyal. So, the grief over such a friend should not be criticized by the cat owners themselves or others.

The acceptance of others can help the cat owner through the grieving process. Everyone who goes through the grieving process, whether the loss was of a person or a pet, should feel that the feelings of grief are acceptable and understandable. If a grieving cat owner does not have supportive people who understand their feelings, there are pet loss support groups on the Internet that offer various forms of emotional support.

The acceptance of the death is the final stage of the grieving process. Acceptance does not mean that the grieving cat owner forgets the cat. Often in the acceptance stage, the cat owner is able to remember the life of a cat with fondness instead of pain and sorrow that the death initially causes. It takes time for the cat owner to reach the acceptance stage. Even if the cat owner is not at this stage yet, it can be a source of comfort to know that eventually the grieving cat owner will be able to smile when they think about their cat.
