Blastomycosis In Cats Symptoms and Treatments

Blastomycosis is an infection caused by the fungal organism Blastomyces dermatidis. The disease usually results in respiratory infection; however, the organism can cause disease in many body tissues including the eyes, skin, reproductive tract, and bones. Blastomycosis is a serious disease that can be fatal. Blastomyces dermatidis is found in the environment predominantly in the Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Mississippi river valleys. Although all animals in these regions are exposed to the organism, only some animals will develop infections. A compromised immune system is the primary risk factor.

Symptoms depend upon the tissues infected by the organism. Treatment requires the use of antifungal medications, often for several weeks to months. In some instances, a cure is not possible and death may result. However, constant medication may keep the disease under control.

The fungus seems to have preferences for certain body systems, although it is usually disseminated (spread) throughout the entire body. Fever, depression, weight loss, and anorexia are common. Draining lesions on the skin are seen in most cases. Some degree of respiratory distress is present in advanced cases. Blindness may occur suddenly because the eyes are frequently involved. Lameness, orchitis (testicular inflammation), seizures, coughing, enlarged lymph nodes, and a variety of other signs are reported.

It is important that you administer the medications as instructed by your veterinarian and that you monitor the appetite and bowel movements of your pet. Some drugs may induce nausea and vomiting. If your pet stops eating, your veterinarian needs to be notified immediately. There is no vaccine or effective way of disinfecting the contaminated soil.
